Hydroxyl radicals (·OH) are neutral free radicals and one of the most powerful oxidizing radical species, capable of oxidizing virtually any compound. With extremely high reactivity, they react indiscriminately with organic carbon and organic matter the moment they are generated, breaking them down into small inorganic molecules. Most reactions reach diffusion-controlled limits.
When vacuum ultraviolet light below 200nm irradiates water, it causes homolysis and photochemical ionization of water molecules, generating hydroxyl radicals.
Photolysis using vacuum ultraviolet is the simplest and cleanest method to generate high concentrations of hydroxyl radicals in water without adding oxidizers, primarily used to remove TOC in UPW (Ultra Pure Water) production processes.
